What is PTA Tax in Pakistan?

PTA tax is the registration fee every imported smartphone must pay before it can use a Pakistani SIM. PTA, working with FBR, registers devices through the DIRBS system. If your phone isn’t registered, it gets blocked from Jazz, Zong, Ufone, Telenor, and SCO after 60 days.

Why is This Tax Required?

The government introduced this to regulate imported devices, generate revenue, and prevent the use of stolen or counterfeit phones. The amount you owe depends on your phone’s price in USD and whether you register with CNIC or Passport.

Which Phones Need Registration?

Any phone brought into Pakistan from abroad needs registration, covering every brand including iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei, and Nokia. This applies to new and used devices alike. Not sure about yours? Check it with our calculator above.

Effective July 1, 2026, taxes were reduced on mid-range phones ($100 to $200 bracket) and high-end phones (above $500). Registration is still mandatory, and taxes are calculated on C&F (Cost and Freight) value. Overseas Pakistanis can still register one phone tax-free for 120 days per visit.

18% Sales Tax (Ad Valorem) is charged separately on top of all base amounts in the tables above. Your actual PTA approved price will be higher. Use our calculator above for the exact total including sales tax.

Frequently Asked Questions About PTA Tax

PTA tax is the registration fee charged by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority on imported smartphones. Any phone used in Pakistan for more than 60 days must be registered, or it gets blocked from Jazz, Zong, Ufone, Telenor, and SCO. It applies to every brand, new or used.
It depends on your phone’s value in USD and whether you register with CNIC or Passport. Budget phones cost a few thousand rupees, while flagships above $500 cost the most. The fastest way to know your exact figure is to select your model in the calculator above.
No. Despite rumors on social media, PTA registration is still mandatory for all imported phones. Budget 2026-27 reduced rates on some price brackets, but the system itself has not been removed. Always verify through official PTA or FBR sources.
No. Just select your brand and model and choose CNIC or Passport. The calculator gives you an estimate without needing your IMEI. You only need the IMEI when you register the phone officially through DIRBS.
It gives a close estimate based on the latest FBR customs values. The exact final amount is confirmed by the official DIRBS system when your PSID is generated, since the dollar exchange rate on the day of registration can shift the number slightly.
Its price, not its brand. PTA tax is calculated on the phone’s value in USD as set by FBR, so two phones from different brands in the same value bracket pay similar tax. This is why an expensive flagship costs far more to register than a budget phone.
Yes, slightly. Because the tax is based on the phone’s USD value converted to rupees, a weaker rupee can raise the final amount even when the base rate stays the same. This is why the official DIRBS figure is calculated at the exchange rate on the day you register.
Yes. You pay it once to register the phone, and the phone stays registered for its lifetime on Pakistani networks. There is no yearly renewal or repeat fee for the same device.
Yes, for a limited window. A new phone works on a local SIM for the first 60 days after you insert the SIM. Once that window ends without registration, the SIM gets blocked and only Wi-Fi keeps working until you register.
It is fully online through the official DIRBS portal, so no office visit is needed. You create an account, enter your device details, generate a payment slip, and pay through a bank or a mobile wallet. The phone is confirmed as registered within a day or two.
Yes, completely free. There is no sign-up, no IMEI required, and no limit on how many phones you check. Just pick a model and registration type to see an instant estimate.
